Our Mission
The Miller Eccles Study Group Texas seeks to encourage scholarship, enlightenment and understanding concerning all things related to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. To that end, we invite qualified speakers to address the group on a broad range subjects pertinent to our faith. Our format encourages in-depth question and discussion that other forums are unable to accommodate. Our speakers are a diverse group of scholars with varied backgrounds and areas of expertise. Most are members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, but some are not. We study historical, sociological, political, medical, scientific, anthropological and other issues, so long as they relate to Mormonism. We are interested in both the arts and the sciences.
We welcome differing viewpoints and aim to provide opportunities for honest inquiry and expression in an open, accepting environment of good fellowship. In such an atmosphere negativism and destructive criticism do not easily flourish. We seek to foster brother and sisterhood amid diversity.
Echoing the words of LDS apostle Hugh B. Brown, we are not so much concerned with whether the ideas expressed in our meetings are orthodox or heterodox as we are that we shall have an opportunity to hear and evaluate those ideas. We trust that if they meet competition in the marketplace of thought, truth will emerge triumphant.
